Traditional Chinese Medicine & Herbal Medicine
in Milton, Ontario
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of assessment and care that uses traditional methods to understand a person’s symptoms and overall health. Treatment may include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and other TCM therapies.
At Thai Oasis, we offer Traditional Chinese Medicine consultations and individualized herbal medicine. Care is provided by Dennis and William, Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (R.TCMPs), at our clinic inside Milton Mall in Milton, Ontario.
During your consultation, your practitioner will review your concerns, health history, medications, and treatment goals. If herbal medicine is appropriate, an individualized formula may be recommended.
What Is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on a system of assessment that considers symptoms in relation to the person’s broader health and patterns identified through TCM principles.
In Ontario, Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners assess body-system disorders using traditional Chinese medicine techniques. They may then recommend TCM therapies intended to promote, maintain, or restore health within their professional scope of practice.
An assessment may consider:
- Your current symptoms and primary concerns
- Your general health and medical history
- Medications, vitamins and supplements
- Sleep, energy and stress
- Digestion and appetite
- Menstrual or reproductive health, when relevant
- Previous treatments and responses
- Traditional observations such as the tongue and pulse, when appropriate
This information helps the practitioner develop an individualized TCM treatment plan. However, TCM does not replace medical testing, emergency care, or treatment from your physician or another qualified healthcare professional.
TCM Herbal Medicine at Thai Oasis
Chinese herbal medicine uses individual herbs combined into formulas according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.
Rather than selecting the same product for everyone with a similar concern, an R.TCMP considers the client’s overall presentation. The practitioner may then select and combine herbs based on the TCM assessment, treatment goals, health history, and known precautions.
Your herbal recommendation may change over time. For example, the practitioner may adjust the formula, dosage or schedule after reviewing your response or changes in your health.
At Thai Oasis, a TCM herbal medicine appointment may include:
- A review of your health history and current concerns
- A Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment
- A discussion of possible treatment options
- Selection of an individualized herbal formula, when appropriate
- Instructions for using the recommended formula
- Follow-up recommendations and possible formula adjustments
The cost of herbal products is separate from the consultation fee.
Why Do People Seek Traditional Chinese Medicine?
People consult a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner for many different reasons. Some have a specific concern, while others want to discuss several symptoms that may be affecting their daily life.
Common areas clients may wish to discuss include:
What to Expect During a TCM Consultation
Before Your Appointment
Complete your intake forms and provide accurate information about your health. Bring a current list of your medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products.
You should also tell your practitioner if you:
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant
- Have allergies or previous reactions to herbs
- Take prescription or over-the-counter medication
- Use other herbal products or supplements
- Have a diagnosed medical condition
- Are receiving care from another healthcare professional
- Are preparing for or recovering from surgery
- Have experienced a recent change in your symptoms
Do not stop taking prescribed medication unless the healthcare professional who prescribed it advises you to do so.
During Your Consultation
Your practitioner will ask about your primary concern and relevant aspects of your health history. Depending on your needs, the assessment may also include questions about sleep, digestion, appetite, energy, stress and other symptoms.
Traditional tongue and pulse observations may be used when appropriate. Your practitioner will then discuss the findings from the TCM assessment and whether herbal medicine may be suitable.
If a formula is recommended, the practitioner will explain how to use it. Ask questions if any part of the recommendation is unclear.
After Your Consultation
Follow the dosage and schedule provided by your practitioner. Do not increase the dose or combine the formula with additional herbal products without discussing it with your practitioner first.
Contact Thai Oasis if you have questions about your instructions. In addition, tell your practitioner about any unexpected response or change in your health.
Follow-up appointments may be recommended to review your response and determine whether the formula should be continued, adjusted, or discontinued.
